FARMINGTON, N.Y. – The 162-day live racing season at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack (FLCR) got underway with Retire to What taking the 2013 opener. The 6-year-old gelding completed the four and one-half furlong distance of Saturday’s first race in a time of :54.33
The $175,835 earner was guided to his eighth career score by jockey Michael Davila, Jr. He broke to the front and was part of an early pace battle with Its Goodtobeking. The James Acquilano-trainee outdueled his rival and held off a late challenge by Barossa to secure the one and three-quarter length victory.
Acquilano and Davila teamed up again to take the third race with Golden Fire. The connections of Robert Gorham and Jeffrey Skerrett also won a pair on Saturday and M. Anthony Ferraro recorded a training double.
Jockey Wilfredo Rohena and trainer Chris Englehart were both honored for their respective 2012 titles after the running of the second race. Rohena was the FLCR leading jockey for the first time in his career and concluded a record streak of ten consecutive titles for John Davila, Jr.
Bill Couch presented the awards to the top performers of last year. The new FLCR Racing Secretary recently took over the position after holding the same occupation at Thistledown for 12 of the last 14 years.  He also worked as Racing Secretary at Gulfstream Park in 2007 and 2008. Couch had previous experience in the industry as a trainer and a chart caller for the Daily Racing Form
