Sneakin the Gold holds off Frisky Warrior in competitive Opening Day feature
FARMINGTON, N.Y. – The 2014 live racing season at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack (FLGR) got underway on Friday with Sneakin the Gold taking the Opening Day Feature. The 8-year-old gelding registered his tenth career victory in the seventh race.
The $114,190 earner set the early pace and opened up his lead on his rivals by six lengths. Frisky Warrior cut into the margin in the late stages of the short dash. Sneakin the Gold held off the late challenge of the 2013 Finger Lakes Horse of the Year to win by a neck. The James Acquilano-trainee was guided to victory by Michael Davila in a four and one-half furlong time of :53.06
Acquilano and Davila finished the Opening Day card with multiple wins for the second consecutive year. The pair teamed up earlier in the day to take the third race with Pure Sweetness.
Jockey Jaime Rodriguez and trainer Chris Englehart were both honored for their respective 2013 titles after the running of the third race. Rodriguez won his first career jockey title after making 149 visits to the FLGR winners circle last year. Englehart saddled 143 winning horses to earn his thirteenth career trainer title. He was the top conditioner for the eleventh consecutive season.
Live thoroughbred action will continue a FLGR four days a week with dark days of Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Thursdays will be added to the schedule beginning May 15. Post time for most days will be at 1:10 p.m. with the exception of Friday which will start at 12:35 p.m. Season schedule after May 31 is pending approval from the New York State Gaming Commission.
