Finger Lakes kicks off 145-day racing season / Jaime Rodriguez returns to jockey colony
FARMINGTON, N.Y. – The 2018 live thoroughbred racing season at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR) is set to get underway on Saturday, April 21. The historic Western New York track’s 145-day meet will begin with the 8-race Opening Day card. Post time for the first race is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. Racing gates open at 11:30 am.
3-time leading jockey Jamie Rodriguez will rejoin the local colony after competing in Ohio in 2017.
The 27-year-old journeyman from Carolina, Puerto Rico won consecutive titles at FLGR from 2013 through 2015. In 2015, he became the first jockey since 2006 to surpass the single season win mark of 200.
An injury set him back in 2016 and he finished second in the standings that year.
After his departure, Rodriguez earned his 1,000th career victory. He guided Disco Outlaw to a one and one-half length victory at Mahoning Valley on February 21.
Rodriguez has a total of 1,033 career wins including ten stakes victories. He is listed on six mounts for Opening Day.
Andy Hernandez-Sanchez is expected to make a belated return after a successful late season appearance at FLGR in 2017. Hernandez won with 20 of his 83 FLGR mounts with an outstanding ROWB of $133.
Last year’s top performers will each be presented with an award after the conclusion of Saturday’s second race.
Jeremiah Englehart will be recognized on Saturday after securing his second consecutive FLGR trainer title in 2017 with 142 victories. He has established himself as the top conditioner after his father Chris Englehart had been the top trainer every year since 2003.
Jockey John Davila, Jr. also won his second consecutive title last year with 183 triumphs. He currently holds a record total of fourteen career FLGR rider titles.
Davila was again the leading percentage jockey in the country in 2017. He also surpassed Les Hulet as the all-time leading FLGR jockey with a current total of 3,843 FLGR victories.
FLGR will add another option to the 2018 wagering menu. A rolling pick-3 will be offered during each race day card. Fans can play the pick-3 wager multiple times a day with a fifty-cent minimum bet.
On Saturday, Lucky North members can check in between 11:30 am and 3:30 pm to spin the wheel. Participants have a chance to win up to $25 in betting vouchers and receive an entry into a $1,000 drawing.
First race post time for Saturday is set at 1:10 pm and the racing gates open at 11:30 am.
