FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Ben Z Rolls rallied in the stretch to score an upset win in the $50,000 Ontario County Stakes at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR) on Monday. The 17-1 outsider took the annual stake for New York-bred 3-year-olds in a final six furlong time of 1:11.56.
The $48,845 earner owned by Joseph Maloney Racing settled in the back of the pack for the early part of the race before circling the field in the late stages. The chestnut colt then caught P J Advantage at the wire to earn the one-half length triumph under the direction of jockey Kevin Navarro. Navarro earned his first FLGR stakes victory in Monday’s seventh race. His four previous stakes triumphs were achieved in Puerto Rico.
The surprise win completed a daily double for trainer M. Anthony Ferraro. Ferraro also won the sixth race with Tale of a Song.
Ben Z Rolls registered his third win in his fourth career start. He was the largest price in the field of five and paid $36.60, $14.20 and $22.00. P J Advantage paid $9.10 and $10.20 for finishing second. What a Catch held the third position and returned $4.80.
The Ontario County Stakes is run annually as a preparation race for the New York Derby. 3-year-old New York-breds will again take center stage at FLGR in the $150,000 New York Derby and the $75,000 New York Oaks. The co-features on the July 21 card will each be run at a distance of one mile and one-sixteenth.
