Veteran trainer earns 1,500th victory with 12-1 outsider
FARMINGTON, N.Y. –Fox Rules went gate-to-wire to score an upset in the 40th renewal of the $160,800 New York Derby at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack on Saturday. The 12-1 outsider covered the one mile and one-sixteenth route for New York-bred 3-year-olds in a final time of  1:45.95. The surprise victory by the chestnut gelding gave trainer M. Anthony Ferraro his 1,500th career win.
Fox Rules was rated patiently in moderate fractions by jockey Pedro Rodriguez. He then opened up his lead to win the rich event by six and one-half lengths.
“I made the lead and slowed it down”, said Rodriguez. “I knew I was walking up front.”
The New York Derby win was the second for Pedro Rodriguez. He also guided Tin Cup Chalice to victory in the 2008 running of the annual stake.
“Pedro rode the race absolutely perfect”, said Ferraro. “This is a great win for us.”
Fox Rules earned his fourth victory in his twelfth lifetime start for owner Langpap Stables. He improved his lifetime earnings to a sum of  $217,878. and paid $26.00, $10.80 and $11.60. Ill Stake U held second and returned $5.40 and $9.00. Smokin Candy finished third and paid $13.40.

M. Anthony Ferraro reached the 1,500 milestone after 29 years as a thoroughbred trainer. He won with the first horse he saddled named Promise to Father. He claimed the horse for $5,000 and then won a $6,500 claiming race at Keystone Park by eight lengths on December 31, 1983.

Ferraro saddled his first stakes winner in 1990 when Northern Crush took the $25,000 Prophet Wise Stakes at Finger Lakes. He now has a total of 28 stakes victories, including two in 2001 with the mother of Fox Rules. Shesastonecoldfox won the $65,350 Lady Finger Stakes and the $137,900 New York Breeders’ Futurity before being entered in the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

Ferraro was born in Olean, NY but has resided in the Finger Lakes area since the early 70’s. He played high school football for the Canandaigua Braves where he holds the record for most consecutive carries for a running back with 37. He has trained at Finger Lakes for most of his career where he earned 1,323.of his 1,500 lifetime wins.

Arctic Queen Handicap
 Lady On the Run won the 13th running of the $50,000 Arctic Queen Handicap on Saturday. The $275,860 earner trained by John Morrison finished the six furlong dash for New York-bred fillies and mares in a time of 1:11.45.
The 4-year-old filly was guided to the one and one-half length triumph by Michael Luzzi. She registered her third career stakes victory and paid $3.00 and $2.20. Gold for the Queen was second and paid $3.50. Pretty Cozzy finished third.
