Finger Lakes Weekly Update
A look back and ahead…
Wilfredo Rohena is currently the leading Finger Lakes jockey after 101 days of live racing in 2012. Rohena arrived at the Western New York track last year and had a strong finish to the meet. The veteran journeyman from Carolina, Puerto Rico rallied to be second in the 2011 rider standings with 107 triumphs. He presently has a total of 89 victories this season and holds a nine win lead on 12-time leading rider John Davila, Jr. Davila returned to action on Monday after being sidelined with an injury that he sustained from a spill that occurred during the running of the second race on Monday, August 27. He did not suffer any fractures from the incident but missed time with soreness in his collarbone and ribs. Davila has not lost the jockey title since John Grabowski was the top rider in 2001.
Longshot of the Week: Mom Proof scored an upset victory for the second time in 2012 at double digit odds. The George Beech-trainee altered course to the rail and surged past his rivals to earn a narrow victory in Tuesday’s seventh race. Apprentice jockey Juan Negron directed the 5 year-old-gelding to the surprise win at odds of 37-1. The victory was the second on the card for Negron. He also visited the winners circle in the sixth race with Caught on Camera.
