Hall of Fame jockey will be aboard Ostrolenka in $150,000 New York Derby

FARMINGTON, N.Y. – John Velazquez is scheduled to ride at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack on Friday, July 3. The Hall of Fame jockey will be aboard two mounts including Ostrolenka in the 43rd running of the $150,000 New York Derby.

The 43-year-old journeyman from Puerto Rico is the all-time leading jockey in North America for career earnings. He currently ranks second of 1,350 riders in 2015 with a sum of $8.83 million. Velazquez has notched 5,339 career victories and amassed a record total of over $327 million in lifetime purse earnings.

Velazquez has won multiple Breeders’ Cup championship races and Triple Crown events. He registered his first Kentucky Derby victory in 2011 with Animal Kingdom.

Ostralenka is the morning line favorite for the New York Derby. The 5-2 program choice won the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park on May 25 by a margin of two lengths. He scored a four and one half length triumph in his only prior start at the one mile and one sixteenth distance. The Todd Pletcher-trainee will be vying for his fifth career victory in the feature race for New York-bred 3-year-olds.

Velasquez will also have a mount in the 29th renewal of the $75,000 New York Oaks. He is listed to ride Temper Mint Patty in the route for 3-year-old New York-bred fillies. Temper Mint Paddy is trained by Jeremiah Englehart and is listed at early odds of 3-1.

The $150,000 New York Derby and the $75,000 New York Oaks will both be contested at a distance of one mile and one-sixteenth.

Beginning at 11:30 am of Friday, the first 1,500 Members to check in at Player Extras will receive a commemorative New York Derby T-shirt.  First race post time is set at 12:35 p.m.
