Classy filly opens up lead to defeat rivals by five and three-quarter lengths
FARMINGTON, N.Y. – Shades of Sugar scored a five and three-quarter length victory in the 32nd running of the $50,000 Niagara Stakes at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack on Thursday. The Jonathan Buckley-trainee won the six furlong event for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies in a final time of 1:11.80.
The bay filly owned by Skyline Stables got in front of her rivals and set a quick early pace. She widened her lead in the late stages to secure the convincing triumph. The daughter of Big Brown and Sugar Punch was guided to her first stakes win by jockey Gabriel Suarez
Shades of Sugar made amends for her only blemish that occurred at Finger Lakes. She displayed her class in the Independence Day Feature after a second place finish as the heavy favorite in an allowance race in her prior start. The 3-year-old star has now won three of her four lifetime starts by an average of over seven and one-half lengths.
She improved her career earnings to a sum of $63,200 and paid $3.50, $2.30 and $2.10. City Gone Wild was a distant second and returned $3.50 and $2.40. Alpha J narrowly earned the show position over Berkshire Hills and paid $3.10
Earlier in the day Dayanara Pizarro registered her first career victory. The apprentice jockey took the fourth race aboard Never Right Joey.
The $150,000 New York Derby is the next stake scheduled to be run at Finger Lakes Casino and
Racetrack. The rich event for New York-bred 3-year-olds will be contested at a distance of one mile and one-sixteenth on Saturday, July 20.
