Chestnut colt wins feature race in first start on a dirt track
FARMINGTON, N.Y. – West Hills Giant scored a one and one-quarter length victory in the 50th renewal of the $247,338 New York Breeders’ Futurity on Saturday at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack. The chestnut colt trained by John Terranova, II won the rich event for New York-bred 2-year-olds at odds of 6-1.
He overcame a stumble at the start and made up ground when he circled his rivals on the turn. The young star sustained his run and secured the victory in a six furlong time of 1:12.81.
The $190,653 earner owned by Robert Castelli, Andrew Cohen and Gina Bentivegna earned his initial stakes triumph in his first start on a dirt surface. His previous two efforts were in route races on the turf at Saratoga.
West Hills Giant visited the winners circle for the second time in his career and paid $15.40, $4.40 and $3.00. In Harm’s Way was second and paid $2.20 and $2.10. Saint Arthur finished third and returned $2.80.
Two additional overnight stakes for New York-bred 2-year-olds were also run on Saturday prior to the feature event. The sixth race was the $50,700 Curlin Stakes and the seventh was the $51,100 Rachel Alexandra Stakes.
Our Pedroia was directed to a four length win in the Curlin Stakes by jockey Nazario Alvarado. The Paul Barrow-trainee finished the six furlong sprint in a time of 1:13.47.
Matchmadeinheaven won the Rachel Alexandra by a margin of one and one-quarter lengths. She remained undefeated and earned her second consecutive stakes victory for trainer Chris Englehart. The talented filly took the six furlong event in a final time of 1:14.40 under jockey John Davila, Jr.
The Upstate NY chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society finished first and received $10,000 in the $30,000 Charity Cup. All charities received a minimum donation of $2,000 for participating in the fifth annual event.
The running of the $247,338 New York Breeders’ Futurity completed the 2012 stakes schedule. Live thoroughbred action continues at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack until the conclusion of the season on Friday, December 7.
